In exchange for a rather nice tortoise + vivarium + bits and bobs, i am going to give my brothers newly acquired 3.9 V8 disco1 a quick service.
Just wanted to double check a few things before i buy the bits for it.
-Oil, should it be 20w50 or 10w40 mineral?
oil air and fuel filter will be Cooper
Spark plugs, was thinking NGK BPR6ES
Its running on lpg (if that makes any difference).
Have i got that about right or have i missed something important?
Another bloody dent...
At this time of year I'd go for 10/40 mineral or semi-synthetic. 20/50 mineral can be a bit slow to get up to pressure on cold winter mornings.
You might want to consider a full coolant change, at the very least you'll need to make sure the anti-freeze level is good.
Check the throttle valve/flap is free and, if needed, clean the gunk out from around it. The rocker cover breather feeds in just in front of the throttle and if the motor spends a lot of time at low throttle positions it can build up and cause the flap to "stick" when closed.
You should also change the flame trap on the RHS rocker cover on the assumption it's never been done before
If the LPG system is running OK I would leave it well alone. The vapouriser can be cleaned when you get a build up of sludge inside but if it's running OK then it's probably clean enough still.
I'd go with Mahle filters and Millers 10/40 semi synthetic and as Dave said check the coolant, BP6ES plugs are fine and change them as LPG always used to eat plugs on mine, if they haven't been done recently then new HT leads, dizzy cap and rotor arm can make a big difference to starting and running in damp (winter) conditions, I used to change mine every 2 years as LPG needs a good spark to get it burning.
