Ok all you computer techies we have , for years I've been using Avira with no probs whatsoever but the last 2 updates (this latest one especially ) have made my poor pc painfully slow and even crashes IE, any suggestions for a more reliable one ?

AVG is free and has worked fine for me for a few years now.

Up to June 2011 AVG worked fine on my work PC laptop. This was the full version that work had a paid licence for. Then the 2011 AVG update went on and it slowed it down soooooo bad when doing a full check - could be up to 30 minutes before the it was anything like useable. I've now switched it off completely. Our technie at work agrees that for anything on NT the last couple of AVG updates have been abysmal and although it used to be our work's standard product we don't use it anymore. Not sure what we are using now though.

I concur, I have installed this on countless machines without a single issue.

Even later reply from me, following some realy good write ups, I've moved all of our systems to Avast. It has a free version and in tests whooped MS Security essentials ffor virus detection.
