Been reading Dave's build thread with eager interest..

The transfer box adaptor arrived this week ...
A whole day spent fitting the transfer box

I sympathize!
I spent a whole day cutting this out:

and then cleaning/prepping for the replacement. Finally finished with the new one tacked in place after 10 hours solid work (only one coffee in all that time). So how come I read on some forum or other that some people do the whole replacement in 4 hours?

when we did the orange rover's cross member , we only cut out the rotten bit's and then cut the new cross member into shape n fitted it.
saving abit of time n hassle.
still a crappy job to do.

Nice idea - would have saved cutting chunks out of the floor to get it in - but unfortunately my ends were pretty rotten too...
I'm beginning to think that - with all this bodywork patching - I would've been better off going down the hybrid route - hell, I would've been better off scrapping it and buying another

But I dooo love messing with it - big boy's Mechano/Lego etc...

It is a bitch of a job though, a mate of mine had his done a few years back by a local garage (not a Land Rover specialist) and it took them 4 days work (charged by the hour), when he got it back he could no longer open the lower tailgate... he was well happy, as you can imagine !

Yes - I thought of that one - I am going to check mine before I finally weld everything up - especially since the mounting hole centres were about 2 mm out and it appears to be out to ones side by an equal amount.. But then I guess that's pretty good by LR standards

One of the problems I've found when fitting the rear x-member if you try to mount it on the chassis mounts first using new bushes, nothing lines up. Fit the old bushes temporarily as all of the others will have sagged and bolt it to the chassis. Then fit the lower tail gate close it up and tack the new x-member in position. Keep extending the tacks and trying the tailgate. I have done a couple now and both fitted okay.
Important!! As you complete each stage reward yourself with beer.

mmm Nice idea - I just remembered that bottle of Black Sheep hidden in the fridge!

Got both sides more or less welded up now (just a few little bits left) and the lower tailgate still shits nicely Another couple of weeks and I should have the tank back in and it will be mobile again... It's been a bit of a pain not being able to move it...
