Finally..............

Postby varleym » Sat Nov 06, 2010 11:43 pm

Went to collect my shiny new chassis today - looks great. Glad I got them to put the North Offroad rear winch crossmember on before it got galvanised.

Got it lifted onto blocks and axles rolled underneath it ready for the big rebuild.

Took a couple of pics which I'll post tomorrow.

Happy days :D :D :D

Mark

Sounds great, I'm very jealous of you fellows who have time and space to do all this stuff. I guess my time will come when the kids move out, about sixteen years then

Progress - Sun 7th Nov

Postby varleym » Sun Nov 07, 2010 7:05 pm

Managed to get the rear suspension just about fitted, although still not tightened up. Remembered to try the axle articulation on full compression before fitting the springs to make sure the extended bump-stops made contact with the axle before the shockers bottomed out.

Small problem that the new bolts for the axle end of the trailing arm were about 10mm too short and although I can get the nut on, it won't thread up to the nyloc bit. I'll sort that out this week.

Words fail me.
No matter how often I see them, I just think: That is a thing of beauty.

Managed to get the front suspension on tonight and it's now an 'official' rolling chassis.

Right angle or not?

Postby varleym » Sat Nov 13, 2010 9:23 am

Question for you technical wizzes out there regarding front axle angle. As you can see from the photo's below, now that I've got the front suspension fitted, the axle is 'tilted' forward significantly. First picture shows the spring actually bending due to the angle and the second picture shows the bump-stop bracket on the axle at an angle of probably 10-15 degrees when I'm assuming this should be near enough horizontal to marry up with the bump-stop as it comes down on the chassis.

The springs are +2 and are probably still at full extent as I've not put the engine in yet, but even accounting for this, the axle looks way too tilted. The axle itself is from Matthews 110 but I'm using my original radius arms (to the best of my knowledge there's no difference between the 90 and 110 radius arms and axles).

Pearls of wisdom gratefully received.

Cheers

That should sort itself out once you've got the engine and gearbox in, they always look odd when there's no weight on them, especially if they're longer than standard anyway.

You can always fit some castor correction arms later if need be, Britpart do some good castor correction arms at decent money, somewhere around the £120 mark for a pair. You can also fit castor correction bushes but they're a bit of a bodge and the bushes don't last long as they are asymmetrical.

Anyway, it's looking very bling, glad to see I'm not the only one that spent hours cleaning and painting everything and forgot to do the diffs :)

I had a similar problem in the Disco. Fitted castor correction arms, problem solved. But like Dave says - wait 'till you get the rest of the gear on!
If I can't fix it, I bodge it!
