Which tyres to get
I'd like to get some chunky offroad tyres to replace the hopeless slicks I have on now! Can anyone recommend some? I'm going to keep the ones I have now for road use as I do a lot of motorway miles, so they don't have to be great on the road. Are there any club guidelines on how "knobbly" they can be? Thanks, Charlotte

It's always very subjective but for trials you really only need a Mud terrain rather than one of the more extreme patterns. MTs will also handle on the road a lot better than some of the Simex copies making the journey to/from the trials more pleasant.
I run a directional diamond pattern like this...
Ideally you want to go for a 235/85, on mine I'm using 265/75 which are about the same diameter but I don't think they dig through the top surface like the thinner ones.
Whatever tyres you go for make sure you get some rims with the best offset you can find. That way you can maintain or even improve on your current turning circle.

There was another recent discussion on tyres here... (the size limits don't really apply to a Defender)

The Cooper STT are gaining in popularity with, I think, 4 or 5 vehicles running them in club trials now.

So far I'm using the cooper STT's so is Tim (both of us are on 285/75/16 I think on 8 inch rims) Mick Simpson and Mike Burgess are running 235/85/16's Richard Bently's running them and Rod has just put them on his motor and Oliver's got them on , they seem to be very good as an all rounder and work well in the sloppy stuff , road manners are also superb (quiet and predictable) . Personally I'm very happy with them, bear in mind also that the Coopers aren't remoulds so should last 6>8 years of normal use whereas remoulds tend to wear out very quickly and you don't know what the carcass that has been used is like .

Sounds like a good deal that Rod.
Charlotte, I will be buying some new tyres soon, everyone has also suggested that I go for the Cooper STT's 235/85/16's.
Just Tyres in York (Foss Islands Road) have a sale on at the moment and can do Cooper STT's for £110.00 each fitted and balanced, obviously fitted to your current rims (if they are 16's or will do tyres to fit your current rims)
Their number is 0800 840 5002 say you saw their advert in the York Evening Press for £5.00 off per tyre.
Hope this helps.
