LT230 transfer box

Postby cortina1498 » Thu Sep 27, 2012 8:09 pm

Hi, I'm seeking advice, will the transfer box from a defender, LT230 suffix 20D with the 1.6:1 ratio be a straight swop for my existing 1.2:1 transfer box on my 1995 discovery 300tdi auto.
thanks in advance
Linda

Yes, it should be a straight swap.

Your 1.2 box might be a "Q" suffix in which case you might find the 1.6 a bit noisier. You might find 1.6 a bit low geared unless you're going to put 35 inch tyres on it too.

Yes but the ratio's won't work , if you're running 235/85/16's you can use a 1.4 but if 205 16 or 235/76 16 you need to stick with the 1.2 (which are the most common and cheapest so if you've go a 1.6 some of the big tyre brigade will snap your hand off as they're difficult to find)

Hi, many thanks for the info, using 31" tyres according to 'Ashcroft calculator' the 1.6:1 transfer box would give me 21.5mph per 1000 revs
Seeing as I very rarely go over 60mph (2750 revs) I can live with that.
It will certainly stop my gearbox shifting from fourth to third and back every few yards on a hill when I am towing my caravan.
Once again thanks

I've tried it and settled on a 1.4, the 1.6 is fine with the 35" Simex's on but too low geared with the 32" normal mud tyres (285/75/16) torque converter was going into full lock up at about 40mph with the 1.6 xfer box.
