S2A diesel blue smoke

Evening all.

We've bought an old S2A for Connor to rebuild for when he's 17 (which gives him 18 months to do it...). It's a 1967 diesel and has supposedly been sat in a barn for the last 15 years.

Well today we managed to get it running, remarkably all it took was to swap the water pump for one that wasn't leaking and one of the glow plugs for one that wasn't open circuit. However there is quite a bit of blue smoke, even when warm.

Now I know stuff all about diesels, so could this be something simple, or does it mean something bad? It has come with a spare engine (supposedly out of a series 3) but we would rather keep the original one if we can as, apart from the smoke, it seems to run really well.

What does it smell like ?? Is it a fuel type smell...?

Have you checked the air filter? the oil level or blockages in the mesh can cause smoke. Another possible is the breather on the rocker cover, again mesh which can get blocked. Apart from those clean the injectors, giving it a service and check the pump timing. With having sat for so long there may be seals that have gone hard or sticking piston rings, the smoke may clear up after a bit of running, but 2 1/4 diesels are smokey at the best of times.

Run it up for an hour or 2 without air filter/breather system on and see what happens , if it's been stood for years it could take quite a while to clean itself out. (make sure you don't drop owt into the intake though as that would be very BAD.

Ta for that, we'll give the filter and breathers a good check over and see what difference that makes. I know it'll always be a bit smokey but at the moment it is excessive and I doubt it would pass an MoT (which presumably calls for no visible smoke at tickover?). We have only run it for 15-20min so far though.
