Disco axle onto Defender

Postby varleym » Sat Sep 25, 2010 10:38 am

Hi all

Managed to source a disco rear axle from a 300Tdi to fit on my defender for the re-build and I had planned to simply swap the 3 bolt flange from the Disco diff for the 4 bolt flange on my Defender diff..........

However..............

When I removed both flanges, the disco one has a multiple (24?) splined shaft abut the Defender one is a 4 spline (effectively a 'cross'). I can't just swap the diffs over as the defender has 10 spline half-shafts and the Disco has 24 spline and I'm not even sure the half-shafts will be the same anyway (one being froma drum braked Defender and the other from a disc braked Disco). I'd rather retain the Disco diff/half-shafts anyway.

Had a quick chat with Mr White this morning (sorry it was so early Dave (10:00  ) - forgot you probably don't surface until the PM on a weekend  ) who said that the very early Defenders had this 4 spline flange but later ones moved on to the 24 spline, so...............

Does anyone happen to have either a flange or a diff from a later Defender kicking about that I can use or am I going to have to go and see the nice man in the parts department at Ripon Land Rover and try to explain what I need?

Cheers

Mark

I for one cant even afford to drive past ripon landrover. Why not try an independant specialist like 4 plus four in leeds?

Good luck with axles. Just about to fit some rock sliders and check levels in axles and transmission which seem to have gone up in volume over last week or so.

Cheers Nick
If it ain't broke, I'd be bloody suprised.

I've got a feeling I've seen 'conversion kits' listed in either LRO or LRM from a company. I can't remember who or where it was though - sorry.

Good luck.

4 bolt adaptor bought from paddock spares, just bolts in place of the old 3 bolt coupling. Have extractor to remove old coupling, let me know if you need it. Still have old 3 bolt prop if you want to go down that road :?
If I can't fix it, I bodge it!

Used to be Mad69 but this site wouldn't let me use it. As I was trying to balance the books and bashing the calculator the name just came to me 8) (mad twat and useless twat had already been taken!)
