Working on re-building the braking system now and had everything worked out until I found this in one of my 'boxes of bits'. Has brake union threads on both ends and stamped up 'Girling' so must be part of the braking system but can't for the life of me either remember/work out where it goes or what it does.

There's a fairly substantial mounting to some sort of bracket but again I can't find anything that it would fit on to in the area of any of the brake components. The vehicle is an early (1985) Defender.

Following judicious use of Google I've found out it's a Distribution valve which goes in the primary (rear axle) brake circuit and (I think) is used to retain some braking pressure within the secondary (front) circuit should the primary fail/leak.

If anyone can confirm the above I'd be grateful.

I think the valve is a bias valve that reduces the braking on the rear axle. Sometimes they are bolted to the inside of the chassis leg below the bulkhead. The valve needs to be correctly positioned to allow the correct braking bias front to rear.
If i can find my old Haynes manual i will have a look let you know.
