Defender rear diff running very hot at input flange area

Postby dave willard » Tue Aug 21, 2018 10:15 pm

When greasing the prop shaft joints after a 20 mile drive I noticed that the rear diff/propshaft joint is very hot at the input shaft end much hotter than the front diff
There is no play in the input shaft which turns freely & the oil level is ok
I have never had a reason to check the rear diff temperature after a run so i dont know if this normal
Anyone found this occurs
i am a bit concerned as i plan to tow my caravan to helmsley

It'd be worth dropping the propshaft off and making sure the UJ moves freely. Also be careful when greasing the siding joint, I've seen them "hydraulic" if the hole in the end plate is blocked and that can cause the UJs some pain. Make sure the propshaft can expand/contract on the sliding joint.
If i tall checks out OK then it's probably normal !
