Helmsley is always a popular event and despite
the weather forecast this event was no exception. The mix of heavy rain showers
with sunny periods in between made the terrain difficult to judge from one
vehicle to the next as the ground constantly changed from wet to dry.
Tom Perrin, Dave Leach, Dave Thomson and Nick
Buckham had set out a technically demanding trial that rarely gave the competitors
time to relax when on the sections which, with the variable ground conditions,
led to a wide variation in scores. They made the most of the terrain available
and are to be congratulated on a well set out and thoughtful trial.
A shortage of marshals on the day meant that Matthew
made the "ultimate sacrifice" and decided not to drive but to marshal instead.
Thanks to those that did brave the weather to marshal, officiate and otherwise
make the event possible.
It was nice to see a good turnout of novice drivers
too, many of whom had taken advantage of the training day at Weardale. Special
mention has to go to Amanda who, in her first trial, finished 9th overall
and 6th in class -beating a large number of very experienced drivers in a
demanding trial.
