Tong Orienteering Trial

2nd December 2001

This was an unusual event, in fact it is thought to be the first of its kind run by an MSA club. It was a trial with a twist - 10 sections and 25 navigation points or markers. Competitors were required to use orienteering type skills to navigate along a predetermined route and were awarded points for each correctly recorded marker. 10 of these markers were at the beginning of a trials section and the competitors had to complete the section and collect an orienteering punch at the end of it. Each navigation marker was worth 10 points, each punch was worth 25 points. They had a total of 6 hours to complete the task.

So at 10am 16 competitors set off into the Tong Off Road site armed with maps, compasses, pens and a confused look on their faces. By 4pm most had lost the confused look (not all) and returned muddier and fitter than ever before, having walked and/or driven every corner of the site ! Congratulations to Adam, Paul and Bob for showing it could be done. Commiserations to Nigel who was robbed of his fourth place when the Range Rover died and had to be towed back incurring a 100 point penalty for late arrival. Thanks once again to all those that helped set the event out and marshalled on the day. You may be pleased to know that the missing 4 percent both attended the event... (see November Newsletter)

The results from the event were originally posted incorrectly and following a query from Mick Simpson (Bobs Navigator) I have now double checked their score card and found it to be correct, the scores have been amended accordingly. My apologies for the mistake.

Due to the mix up with the other event we paid less for the land than originally expected so Matthew will be calculating a reduced entry fee, the difference will be passed back to those that took part, probably with a reduced entry fee for the next event you attend.
